Rather than being fed by a cold-water storage tank in the loft and topped up by gravity, it takes its supply directly from the mains and holds it under that same pressure inside the cylinder itself. That single design choice is what gives unvented systems their main selling point: strong, even pressure at every hot outlet in the house, upstairs and downstairs alike, without needing a header tank at all.
