Winter isn't the obvious season for a caravan holiday, and it's worth saying plainly that it isn't a replacement for summer: shorter days, colder weather and a good number of seasonal facilities closed for the year all apply. None of that rules it out. It just changes what the break is for.

Prices tend to follow the crowds down too. A midweek break in November or February is usually a good deal cheaper than the same nights in August, and pitches that would be booked out months ahead in summer are often available at short notice off-season. That flexibility suits anyone who can travel outside school holidays, or who just fancies a last-minute break rather than a diary-planned one.
May carries more public holidays than any other month in the UK calendar, and for anyone planning a caravan break it's worth knowing how they line up. The early May bank holiday falls on the first Monday of the month, giving a long weekend on its own. Later in the month, the spring bank holiday, the last Monday in May, often falls in the same week as the spring half-term, which stacks two reasons to travel into a single, slightly longer window.
Booking early is less about beating a queue and more about choice. A pitch with a sea view, a caravan that sleeps six comfortably, or a week that lines up with both parents' annual leave: these are the bookings that get taken months out, not the week before. Parks along the English coast, ours included, tend to open the following year's summer diary not long after the current season closes, so the families who book in autumn get first pick of the following July and August.
The two half-terms in the school year, one in mid-February and one in the last week of October, are among the busiest short breaks in the UK holiday-park calendar. Both fall at a point in the year when a week off feels overdue, and both are short enough, typically five to seven days, to suit a caravan break without needing to use up much annual leave.
