Start with the fill valve. This is the mechanism that lets water into the cistern after a flush and shuts off once the tank reaches the correct level, usually via a float or a diaphragm. When a fill valve wears, the most common signs are a hissing or trickling noise that continues long after the cistern should have stopped filling, a water level creeping up to or past the overflow pipe, or a float arm that no longer rises high enough to trigger shut-off. Mineral deposits inside the valve seat are often the culprit, particularly in hard water areas, and once the seal degrades a full replacement is usually more reliable than trying to clean it out.

Toilet seat hinges look like one of the simplest parts on the whole cistern-and-pan setup, right up until the wrong replacement arrives and will not line up with the holes already drilled into the pan. Two fixing systems dominate the UK market, top-fix and bottom-fix, and they are not interchangeable without redrilling the pan, which nobody wants to do.

Cable-actuated systems use a flexible cable in place of the rigid spindle, which allows the button to be positioned somewhere other than directly above the flush valve, useful on concealed cisterns and certain close-coupled designs where the lid mechanism does not line up with the valve beneath. The cable itself can stretch, kink or seize inside its outer sheath over time, and a button that has become stiff, or one that no longer springs back after use, usually points to the cable rather than the flush valve itself.

Available space inside and around the cistern also narrows the choice. A shallow cistern with limited depth may not give a bottom-entry valve enough room to seat correctly, while a side-entry valve needs clear wall space at the right height with no other fittings in the way.

A low-level cistern, by contrast, is fixed to the wall a short distance above the pan and connects down to it through a visible flush pipe, usually around 32mm or 38mm depending on the specification. This changes several things at once: the flush valve or siphon outlet needs to accept that flush pipe rather than seal directly onto the pan, the fill valve can often be a longer-bodied type since there is more depth in the tank, and the lever or handle mechanism sits at a different height and angle relative to the flush arm.
