Bottom-fix hinges are the traditional arrangement, with a bolt passing down through the pan from above and a nut and washer tightened from underneath the rim. This means access is needed both above and below the pan to fit or remove the seat, which is straightforward on a floor-standing toilet but considerably more awkward on a wall-hung pan where the underside is harder to reach, or where a previous fitting has corroded the nut solid against the porcelain.
A flush handle or lever that has stopped working properly is one of the more straightforward toilet faults to diagnose, but plumbers still lose time on it when the replacement lever does not match the flush valve fitting already in the cistern. Before reaching for a new part, it is worth ruling out a simple adjustment first.
A cistern that never quite stops filling is one of the most common callouts a plumber gets, and the fix hinges on correctly identifying which of two components has failed: the fill valve or the flush valve. Get this wrong and you swap a part that was never the problem, then head back out a second time.
Cable-actuated systems use a flexible cable in place of the rigid spindle, which allows the button to be positioned somewhere other than directly above the flush valve, useful on concealed cisterns and certain close-coupled designs where the lid mechanism does not line up with the valve beneath. The cable itself can stretch, kink or seize inside its outer sheath over time, and a button that has become stiff, or one that no longer springs back after use, usually points to the cable rather than the flush valve itself.
The practical check before assuming universal will do the job is to look at how the existing part connects, not just what it looks like. A universal valve that adjusts in length is not the same as one that adjusts in outlet diameter or seal profile, and forcing a universal outlet against a proprietary seal often produces a fit that looks correct at first glance but weeps within days.
