The wrapping is the point. A box of individually wrapped pieces can be opened and left on a shared desk or in the kitchen, and people take one as they pass. Nobody has to break into a communal slab or worry about who touched what. For a team that is half in the office and half at home on any given day, a wrapped piece also keeps until the person it was meant for is actually in.

Most of the stress in Christmas gifting comes from timing rather than choice. The gift itself is usually settled early in your head; it is the ordering, the posting and the arriving that slip until the point where everything is against you. A short November checklist takes that pressure off before December starts.

Knowing the date is only half the job. The other half is working backwards from it so a gift arrives in good time rather than the Saturday morning after. A short countdown makes that easier.

January does not have an obvious gifting occasion built into it the way November and December do, which is exactly why it gets overlooked as a moment to say thank you for the year that has just finished. A New Year thank you gift, sent to a client, a colleague, or simply someone who helped out over the previous twelve months, works well precisely because it is not expected, and does not carry the pressure or competition that surrounds Christmas gifting.

Starting the year by properly thanking the people who made the previous one work, rather than letting that gratitude go unmarked simply because there is no obvious calendar date for it, is a small habit worth building into January rather than leaving to chance.
